After an outstanding weekend of classic racing and memorable celebrations, the Goodwood Revival has brought the phenomenal 2024 motorsport event season to a close.

Timeless racing and the move to sustainable fuel
In a landmark moment, the 2024 Goodwood Revival became the world’s first historic motorsport event to run its entire race schedule solely on sustainable fuel. As announced in November 2023, all competitors were required to use a fuel which has a minimum of  70% advanced sustainable components. Goodwood is proud to have led the way in the adoption of sustainable fuels for historic motor racing, having hosted the Fordwater Trophy at the 2023 Revival and the Ken Miles Cup and Gordon Spice Trophy at the 81st Members’ Meeting earlier this year.

Racing highlights across the weekend included head-to-head battles on two wheels - with some fairly unpredictable weather in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy with Michael Russell and Michael Rutter, taking the win on a Norton Velocette MSS. Meanwhile, the pairing of IndyCar legend Dario Franchitti and all-time NASCAR great Jimmie Johnson took first place in one of the weekend’s most prestigious races, the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DB4GT, while BTCC title contenders Jake Hill and Tom Ingram duked it out for the RAC TT Celebration. Elsewhere, young drivers took to the pedals of their Austin J40s in the Settrington Cup across the weekend, with Josh Johnston taking home the overall win, closely followed by Luca Franchitti and Hugo Upward.

Legendary drivers and riders
As ever, the Goodwood Revival welcomed a stellar-line up of drivers and riders from across the world of motorsport including former Formula 1 drivers, BTCC and NASCAR Series champions, and Le Mans and Isle of Man TT winners.

Taking to the historic Motor Circuit across the weekend was 23-time Isle of Man TT winner John McGuinness MBE, nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, seven-time NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson and four-time IndyCar Champion Dario Franchitti.

From the high-octane world of Formula 1, Goodwood was also delighted to welcome two Formula 1 World Champions - three-time winner Sir Jackie Stewart and 1997 champion Jacques Villeneuve - alongside former drivers David Brabham, Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Karun Chandhok, Max Chilton and two-time Formula E Champion Jean-Éric Vergne.

Other drivers, riders and motorsport legends who joined us over the weekend included Giacomo Agostini, Alex Brundle, Tommy Bridewell, Carlos Checa, Maria Costello, Christian Horner, Katarina Kyvalova, André Lotterer, Emanuele Pirro, Andy Priaulx and Gordon Shedden.

Memorable celebrations
An impressive contingent of pre-1966 beach buggies and cars took to the track each morning to officially open the event as Meyers Manx celebrated 60 years of its original dune buggy. On Friday morning the parade was joined by The Duke of Richmond and Lord March as 100 examples of eclectic beach machinery braved the rain, ahead of the unveil of the pre-production Meyers Manx 2.0 EV dune buggy, which made its European debut in the Earls Court Motor Show.

Celebrating the truly extraordinary career of John Surtees - and marking 60 years since his Formula 1 World Championship - the Goodwood Revival brought together cars and bikes from the many disciplines he competed in. The tribute to Surtees celebrated his extraordinarily successful motor racing career - which included seven motorcycle World Championships between 1956 and 1960, the 1964 Formula 1 World Championship, and the 1966 Can-Am Championship. The parade featured everything from 250cc, 350cc and 500cc motorcycles to Grand Prix winners, unlimited sports cars and GTs.

Marking 80 years since the Normandy landings, over 100 military vehicles - that were instrumental during D-Day - were on display across the weekend with a poignant parade on Sunday. From Supermarine Spitfires to magnificent Amphibious crafts, the moment marked the largest ever gathering of military vehicles at Goodwood and witnessed an emotional speech from The Duke of Richmond as well as a short film detailing Goodwood and the South Coast’s part in Operation Overlord. The parade was led by Field Marshal Montgomery’s recently-restored Rolls-Royce Wraith Staff Car, which carried D-Day veterans John Dennett (Royal Navy) and George Chandler (Coastal Forces).

Just plane fun: Taking to the skies
The Freddie March Spirit of Aviation presented by Bonhams|Cars brought together some of the most incredible and rarely seen machines from aviation history. In the spotlight were a rare collection of Supermarine Spitfires including the 1943 IXb and 1944 LF Mk.IXe, MK 9 and Mk IX, all of which were instrumental during D-Day. The 1939 Westland Lysander G-CCOM was awarded ‘Best in Show’ - closely followed by the 1941 de Havilland DH82a Tiger Moth G-ASPV in second place - as judged by Director of Transair Flight Equipment Katherine Moloney, Guinness World Record holder Mack Rutherford, Squadron Leader Alan Jones, aviation historian, broadcaster and writer Paul Beaver and former British Motorcycle Champion Steve Parrish.

Revive & Thrive
The Revive & Thrive Village continued to celebrate and champion creative ways to rethink, repair and re-wear iconic designs with a programme of talks, workshops and demonstrations taking inspiration from the resourcefulness and meticulous care that were epitomised by the attitudes of earlier generations.

Moving over to a new location at the Revival High Street - with DJs providing classic beats with a modern twist - the village welcomed a spectacular line-up of speakers led by world-famous glamour evangelist Dita Von Teese, including model and style icon David Gandy, Paula Sutton of Hill House Vintage, designer and presenter Patrick Grant, Great British Sewing Bee winner Annie Phillips and a Bridgerton panel of costume designers joined by actor Ruth Gemmel - otherwise known as Lady Bridgerton - amongst many others.

Just around the corner, the Revive & Thrive Workshop presented by TV’s Dominic Chinea and Micaela Sharp offered sewing, mending and embroidery workshops, alongside large-scale classic car and bike restoration projects - championing heritage craft and skills.

A piece of motorsport history: official opening of the Tyrrell Shed
Having opened its doors for a sneak peek to Members and Fellows of the Goodwood Road Racing Club at the 81st Members’ Meeting, the historic Formula 1 building was officially opened to the public at the Revival on Sunday morning, with Martin Brundle, Sir Jackie Stewart and The Duke of Richmond in attendance. Once home to Ken Tyrrell’s championship-winning Formula 1 racing team, visitors had the opportunity to visit the Tyrrell Shed across the weekend which had been fitted out to reflect the period in which it was in use, alongside housing its former creations the Tyrrell 001 and 006.

Under the hammer: Auction highlights
A collection of unique and spectacular vehicles went under the hammer at the Bonhams|Cars Auction on Saturday. Highlights included the 1998 Porsche 911 Type 993 Turbo Coupé which sold for £614,200, the 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Corto Spider Recreation which sold for £552,000 and the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Touring Coupé which sold for £471,500.

Unmissable moments around the event
Visitors entered into a scene straight out of a western film as this year’s main entrance took its cue from the 75th anniversary of the first televised western on British television, with the area transformed into an immersive, theatrical experience as Wild Westhampnett.

The Betty Richmond Driving School on the Richmond Lawn celebrated 60 years since the first state-of-the-art simulators revolutionised driving education. The unique experience featured 1950s-style driving simulators with visitors able to have a go and challenge themselves to pass the ultimate driving test.

Famous faces around the event included Hugh Bonneville, America Ferrera, Joseph Fiennes, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, David Gandy, Ruth Gemmell, Geri Halliwell-Horner, Nadia Parkes and Dita Von Teese.

Event charity
This year’s Goodwood Revival supported St Wilfrid’s Hospice, a charity who provide expert palliative and end-of-life care to people in parts of West Sussex and Hampshire. St Wilfrid’s were on site across the weekend with volunteers sharing details of the incredible work they do, alongside their Retro & Vintage pop-up which showcased some wonderful pieces of second-hand fashion, available year-round in their Chichester shop.
