Matt Coles, Memorabilia Specialist for Broad Arrow Auctions, provides insight into some of his personal favourites due to go under the hammer.

UK Lot 205: Brabham 1991 BT60Y Ex Martin Brundle Formula One Car
Brabham is a name synonymous with racing success. Jack Brabham was a three-time Formula One World Champion and won his last Championship in a team and car bearing his own name. It is a feat which has never been repeated. Team Brabham went on to win further World Championships with Denny Hulme and Nelson Piquet, whilst multiple race wins were also achieved with the likes of Graham Hill, Jacky Ickx, Carlos Reutemann and Niki Lauda.

This car, chassis 001, was used by Brundle in the San Marino Grand Prix where he qualified 18th on the grid and finished 11th in the race. It was also used in practice by the team for the Monaco Grand Prix and then acted as the primary spare car for the rest of the year.

Sold today as a ‘show car’ complete with its original gearbox casing, but without the engine and other running gear, it represents a wonderful opportunity to own a fantastic display piece with genuine Brabham Formula One race history and provenance. Estimate - £50,000 - £75,000.

UK Lot 171: 1:1 Ferrari 250 TR 58 (0704) Nose Sculpture
This 1:1 scale nose sculpture is an exact replica of that on Ferrari 250 TR 58 chassis #0704. The car was one of the most significant Ferraris of its era, having been raced as a works car by the likes of Mike Hawthorn, Peter Collins, Olivier Gendebien, Masten Gregory, Wolfgang Von Trips and Phil Hill.

This stunning sculpture was made from a buck taken from the car when it was restored in the 2000s and has been manufactured using the traditional methods of the time. It features an original Ferrari badge, Marchal lights and is painted to match the car it emulates. Estimate - £12,500 - £17,500.

UK Lot 202: 1988 Ayrton Senna McLaren MP4/4 front screen
The McLaren MP4/4 is without a doubt one of the greatest racing cars. Driven by Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, the duo won 15 out of 16 races in 1988. Senna went on to win the World Championship with 13 pole positions and 8 wins.

This front windscreen was used on one of Senna’s cars in that famous season and comes with a letter of authenticity from his mechanic, Neil Trundle, as having Senna-specific history. This screen, a short variant, was his screen of choice, and can be seen in multiple races during his McLaren career. Estimate - £5,000 - £7,000.

UK Lot 109: Max Verstappen 2018 original Red Bull overalls
Formula One driver Max Verstappen won three consecutive Formula One World Drivers' Championship titles from 2021 to 2023 with Red Bull and is currently poised to retain his crown in the 2024 season.

These Puma overalls were used by Verstappen during the 2018 season, when he won two Grand Prix, scored 249 points, and appeared on the podium a total of eleven times. Authenticated by the Hall of Fame Collection, and complete with a Certificate of Authenticity, they are a wonderful piece of contemporary Formula One history and a must-have for any enthusiast. Estimate - £15,000 - £20,000.

The second part of this exclusive online auction is based in Switzerland and presents 75 lots of contemporary and historical Formula One racing helmets, all from a single private Swiss collection.

Matt Coles, Memorabilia Specialist for Broad Arrow Auctions, previews some of his personal favourites in the Swiss online sale, taking place 27th October – 10th November.

Swiss Lot 160: Rubens Barrichello 2002 signed original Ferrari helmet
Rubens Barrichello held the record for the greatest number of races in Formula One for many years, spending six years of his career racing for Ferrari. During that time, he won nine Grand Prix, and assisted Ferrari to five Constructors’ World Championships.

This Arai GP5 Mike Fairholme Designs painted helmet, number 7-02, was used by Barrichello to win the 2002 United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis. The helmet is signed by the driver, retains an original custom Ferrari radio box and comes with a letter of authenticity from Mike Fairholme Designs. Estimate – 12,000 – 18,000 CHF.

Swiss Lot 134: Jos Verstappen 1997 signed original Tyrrell helmet
Jos Verstappen competed in Formula One for Benetton, Simtek, Footwork Arrows, Tyrrell, Stewart, and Minardi, and was the German Formula Three champion and Masters of Formula Three winner in 1993. Jos is father to Max, himself a legend in Formula One.

This Arai GP4, painted by the Arai factory, is an extremely collectible Jos Verstappen helmet from the 1997 season. It shows good signs of use and is clearly signed on the yellow visor, one that was a regular preference of the driver. Rare top vents are also fitted to the helmet which were only used in Formula One for a brief period of time. The helmet comes with a letter of authenticity from the late Ken (Robert) Tyrrell. Estimate - 8,000 – 10,000 CHF.

Swiss Lot 140: Michael Schumacher 1991 signed original Benetton helmet
Michael Schumacher is known as one of the greatest racing drivers of all time, having won seven Formula One World Championships, ninety-one Grand Prix and achieved sixty-eight pole positions. During a Formula One career spanning from 1991 to 2012 he raced for Jordan, Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes.

This Shoei GRV 4 helmet shows good signs of use from the 1991 season with Benetton. The helmet carries the rare sponsorship of Autopolis, which is reversed on one side for the car’s on-board camera. The helmet is clearly signed and dated 1991 on the top of the helmet by Michael. It comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Benetton Formula 1 team and is signed by Team Principal of the time, Flavio Briatore. Estimate - 22,500 – 28,000 CHF.

I urge established and new collectors alike to take the time to view both the UK and Swiss auctions in readiness to bid for these stunning pieces of motorsport history.”
