Crail set for biggest summer event

SEARCH FOR SCOTLAND’S MOST POWERFUL ROAD CAR

Crail Airfield is set for its busiest event of the summer, with thousands of spectators expected to watch the country’s fastest cars battle it out for the title of Scotland’s most powerful road car 2004, as part of Ultimate Scottish Streetcar (USSC) on Sunday, 8th August 2004.

Covered by Redline magazine, who tour the UK on the ‘Quest for the Best’ cars in the country, this is only the third year that the Fife based, Crail Airfield, has run the USSC event, which has attracted over 150 entrants each year in a bid to gain the coveted title.

This year Crail will run two disciplines – although the ¼ mile remains the ultimate prize of the day, in addition there will be the new drift/sprint track, which will also be in operation. This will consist of a sprint like format with all drivers required to complete a circuit followed by a figure of eight round the extended drifting oval. Meanwhile the search for the best ‘Show & Shine’ vehicles that Scotland has to offer will continue as part of the day’s line-up.

As part of a special display, there will be demonstration runs throughout the day from the mighty 2000hp, American, Chevrolet 210 Sedan, from Cumbernauld, which has pulled in a blistering 8 seconds on the ¼ mile at a speed of 160.5 mph at Santapod Raceway, south of the border. The Irish stunt team ‘Opposite Lock’ will return to Crail as part of the action at the drifting ring.

Last year’s winner at a time of 10.8, Kevin Sharpe, from Kirkaldy, will be returning to Crail with his 650 bhp Escort Cosworth, to fight for the 2004 title. All cars entering this event on the 1/4 mile must be road legal.

Organiser, William Robertson, is confident that there will be a good turn out for this year’s USSC.  He comments: “This event has drawn some phenomenal cars over the last two years, many of which are specially tuned for the USSC battle at Crail and we expect no less for 2004.  Don’t be put off by the ‘big boys’ this event is open to all road cars who want to show they can stand up against the best in the country.”

As well as the run what you brung action on the ¼ mile drag strip, which takes place on the mile long runways of the 350 acre, WWII air base, there will be a number of static shows, and an indoor marquee with stalls and trade stands. Further entertainment will include a Radio Tay road show and entertainment from Equinox, and burnout & drifting challenge.

The only requirement to take part at Crail is a valid UK driving licence, £10 for admission and a £15 signing-on fee, which entitles participants to unlimited runs on the ¼ mile and the new drift/sprint track. At the end of the day personal performance print-outs showing reaction times to the start lights, 60', 1/4 mile times, and top speed will be given out – personal times can also be easily accessed through crailraceway.co.uk

Gates open 9.00 am strip at 9.30am. The drag strip will remain open till 4.30pm followed by cruise action at the oval till 7pm. Adults £10:00, children £5:00
