Formula BMW UK Championship

Rounds 15+16 - Brands Hatch - Race Brands Hatch. Joao Urbano (Carlin Motorsport Team Portugal) and James Sutton (Fortec Motorsport) shared the wins and second places in Brands Hatch. They dominated the races with pole position to chequered flag performances for Joao in race one and James in race two. The final podium position was taken by Tim Bridgman in race one and Philip Glew (Soper Sport) in race two. In the points table the battle is still close between the top three Philip, Tim and Josh Fisher (Motaworld Quantexe Racing). Ross Curnow (Panther Motorsport) did not have the Rookie class all his own way as in the first race this category was won by Jordan Wise (Soper Sport). However, a win in race two has put him 46 points ahead of his nearest rival Sam Bird (Carlin Motorsport).

A relaxed Joao said after the second race: "Race one was perfect, but James was too strong in race two and I lost out at the start." James's view on the weekend was: "I worked hard in race one and was a bit discouraged to see Joao drive away. In race two I had a game plan and stuck to it so am delighted." Tim and Philip both had the championship in their thoughts so did not want to jeopardise their races by trying any rash moves.

In race one Joao made the perfect start and stayed in front and was unchallenged until the chequered flag. James did the same but life behind them was not that easy for the championship contenders Philip and Tim. Tim took Philip on the outside of Druids on lap one and from then on had the blue car filling his mirrors. They battled to the flag and this allowed Oliver Turvey (Team SWR Pioneer) to catch up, but he knew the possible consequences of getting into the middle of the battle. Bruno Senna's (Carlin Motorsport) race lasted half a lap until he went off at Graham Hill Bend. Jordan Wise had a bad start but managed to keep a consistent pace and won the rookie class from Sam Bird.

Race two, by Formula BMW UK standards, was quite processional. The top five in the race were the same as the top five in qualifying. Going into Druids on the first lap Josh tried to overtake Philip on the outside of Druids, but the Soper Sport driver was having none of it and, despite them going in three abreast with Tim, they all came out as they started, and stayed in these positions. The closest racing in fact happened for the lower places out of the top ten. Bruno Senna did not go off this time and admitted after the race that the weekend had given him some very good experience and he could now build on this. Ross Curnow this time relegated Jordan to second in the Rookie class.

Rounds 17 and 18 will be at Rockingham on the 5th September.
