The artisanship of true coachbuilding is often considered a lost art, and it is therefore fitting that the stunning vehicle offered here is named for the fictional paradise of Shangri-La. Under the direction of skilled car-builder Rick Dore, this hand-formed roadster whose origins are noted as a 1936 Cadillac makes use of modern mechanical technology coupled with body accents that harkens back to the legendary prewar European coach firms and designers. To that end, this exclusive offering features a hand-formed aluminum body fabricated to Dore’s specifications by Marcel DeLay of Marcel's Custom Metal in Corona, California, covering a 116-inch wheelbase Art Morrison chassis that features coil springs on all four corners. From the swelling rise of the front fenders, the body lines flow gracefully rearward, leaving the impression of grand-touring performance even when sitting still, and all of it rendered in the Art Deco streamlining style of the late 1930s.
A noteworthy touch was the large-diameter headlamps for an Old Continent appeal. However, under the expansive hood and exquisitely reworked grille is a GM 380 HP Ram Jet V-8 engine, uniquely modified to allow for a side-mount-design throttle body. A 1940 Lincoln air cleaner was adopted under the hood as well. Behind this engine is a GM 700R4 overdrive automatic transmission for driving enjoyment.
Of course, it is the visual appeal of this vehicle that draws attention. Shangri-La features a removable brushed-metal roof, custom-fabricated brass and chrome-plated trim and moldings, a one-off curved windshield and magnificently executed paint using custom-blended PPG Indian Ink-Well Blue applied by Cambra Speed Shop in Orange, California. Once inside, passengers are treated to a fully custom interior created by Ron Mangus, and the finishing touch was Ron Francis wiring.
Riding on wide whitewall tires and multi-spoked chrome wheels, the Shangri-La roadster is the noted winner of the Charley Hutton Paint Award, and has the design, desire and exclusivity to earn this name.
