Collection of 18 Corvette Pace Cars offered as one lot at Mecum Indy

A retired physician, Dr. Richard Foster makes his home in New Castle, Indiana, which is just over 50 miles away from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In 1954, when he was around 12 years old, his father took him to the Indianapolis 500 for the first time, and young Richard was immediately and hopelessly captured by the spell of the Brickyard.

When he became financially empowered as a successful medical professional, he embarked on a lifelong quest to collect automobiles, many of them Chevrolet Corvettes, a dandy assortment of which were also Indianapolis 500 Pace Cars. While his grand total of 42 cars currently populates a private museum on his property that houses varying makes and models, he is most proud of his Corvette pace cars, festival cars and pace car replicas that represent nearly 20 Memorial Day Classics—the same number of Indianapolis 500s he has attended over the years. “I’ve always been in love with that race,” he said. “I have many great memories of being there and seeing so many tremendous cars and drivers.”

At 80 years old, Dr. Foster has decided the time has come to pass them along to someone else. As such, he will be bringing his selection of Corvette pace cars, festival cars and pace car replicas to Dana Mecum’s 35th Original Spring Classic in Indianapolis this May 13-21, with all to be offered as a single lot.

Dr. Foster’s pace car collection includes not only documented, factory-produced Corvette pace cars and festival cars, but faithfully executed and IMS-authorized pace car reproductions as well, which, thanks to rigorous research and fact-checking, are nearly indistinguishable from originals. For those who share Dr. Foster’s same deep and abiding affection for the Indianapolis 500 and the Corvette pace cars that have become almost as much a part of the show as the race and the racers themselves, the Dr. Richard Foster Corvette Pace Car Collection will present a prime opportunity to see, enjoy, marvel at and perhaps bid on a piece of that legacy. It’s not often that such a truly phenomenal collection comprising this many investment-grade Corvettes comes to the Mecum block, and almost never are they sold as one individual lot.
