Rodin Carlin’s Callum Voisin claimed his first two pole positions of the season at a sun drenched Spa-Francorchamps Friday afternoon.
The British-Swiss driver recorded a best time of 2m14.912s with six minutes of the 25-minute session remaining, putting him 0.127s faster than Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Alex Dunne, while long-time pace-setter McKenzy Cresswell was third, just 0.020s further back.
Douglas Motorsport’s Tymek Kucharczyk posted the fourth fastest time, two tenths of a second away from Cresswell and 0.143s clear of the lead JHR Developments car of David Morales.
Morales’ teammate Matthew Rees was just six thousandths of a second further back, and 0.020s ahead of Arden VRD’s Nico Christodoulou in seventh.
Fortec Motorsport’s Max Esterson claimed eighth on the grid for race one, 0.025s away from his fellow North American and 0.013s clear of Hillspeed’s Gerrard Xie, who enjoyed his best qualifying result of the season with ninth.
Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Michael Shin completed the top-10, which was covered by 0.745s. The session came to an early end to recover the stranded car of Arthur Rogeon, and with just two minutes left on the clock, there wasn’t enough time to restart, denying Cresswell a potential fastest lap having been well up on his final tour.
Voisin set two laps faster than any other driver, meaning his second best effort secured him pole for race two also, with the top-three order remaining the same.
Rees and Christodoulou were fourth and fifth with an identical lap time, with Esterson and Kucharczyk next up.
Xie, championship leader Joseph Loake and Fortec’s Edward Pearson completed the top-10 on the second fastest times classification.
Two GB3 races will take place at Spa-Francorchamps today with the first due to commence at 11.56 local time (10.56 GMT), with all racing this weekend to be live streamed on the GB3 Championship website.
Voisin said: “This feels amazing, it’s a really competitive grid and it’s tough to get pole positions this year. To do it at a track like Spa couldn’t be any better really. Especially as it’s a bit of redemption from last year, we didn’t have a great qualifying at all, so to come back here and grab double pole is unexpected but a brilliant result.
“The guys have worked flat out and I can’t thank them enough. We have just got better and better with every session and really happy to come out on top. I don’t really know what happened with the red flag so there was a little bit of luck on my side but either way I think we would have been on for a very good position, and I’m over the moon.
“We’ll see what we can do, either way we need to bag some points and see where we end up. Starting on pole here is more difficult than other places, but we’ll give it our best shot either way.”
