THE STORY
The 1962 model year was the end of the line for the first-generation Corvette, and as such, it featured some very minor revisions in anticipation of an all-new car to debut in 1963. The contrasting color side cove with chrome trim was retired, and that area was now body color without any trim. The grille was blacked out, and a new ribbed chrome rocker trim design was implemented.
The more significant changes for the 1962 Corvette took place under the hood. A new 327 CI version of the venerable small-block V-8 was introduced with a 4-inch bore and a 3.25-inch stroke. The Corvette’s base powertrain included a 250 HP version of the 327, which was mated to a 3-speed manual transmission. Optional engines were available in 300, 340 and 360 HP versions, the latter coming with the top fuel-injected V-8, while transmission options included a 4-speed manual and 2-speed Powerglide automatic.
