THE STORY
The 1995 film “Bad Boys” grossed $141,247,413 in worldwide box office profits, slotting it as the 23rd highest-grossing film of the year—an excellent position by Hollywood’s standards. The movie famously starred a Porsche 964 Turbo, which was, in reality, owned by the film’s director, Michael Bay, and driven by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, who played dedicated police officers in the movie. However, the Porsche wasn’t the only automotive star of the film, sharing its screen time with this 1965 Shelby Cobra Replica.
“Bad Boys” was filmed in South Florida, and this 1965 Shelby Cobra Replica served as the chariot of choice for the French drug kingpin Antoine Fouchet (played by Tcheky Karyo). Used in an exhilarating final chase scene down a runway at Opa-Locka airport, a second Cobra replica in the same color scheme is destroyed in a wreck, though this one was used in the beauty shots. Known to the production as “Bad Boy 1,” it is a one-owner car owned by South Beach Classics, a collector car dealership and vehicle rental service for the film, modeling and music industries. Originally finished in red, Larry Crenshaw of Columbia Pictures chose the Kellison Stallion Cobra as Fouchet’s ride, having it painted Midnight Blue within 48 hours to meet the needs of the movie. When filming completed, this never-crashed “hero” Cobra replica was placed in dry storage, allowing it to remain very much in the same condition as it’d been seen in the movie.
