WOLVERHAMPTON overcame a stern test against Midlands rivals Coventry to maintain their unbeaten home record with a 51-41 win at Monmore Green. The hosts needed a late surge to prevail and ensure the battling Bees left empty-handed, as the gap was just two points with three heats remaining.Freddie Lindgren top-scored for Wolves with 13+1, dropping his only point to opposing skipper Chris Harris who won his first three rides on his way to 13. Lindgren was backed up by Jacob Thorssell (12) and the returning Peter Karlsson who tallied 11+1 at reserve.Wolves boss Peter Adams said: “We knew it was going to be tough against Coventry, because they have a few riders who are always a threat around here.“I said beforehand I would be happy with a one-point win, but we delivered a bit more than that and we can’t do any more than keep winning our home matches.“That’s the second consecutive meeting here where the black and white helmet has dragged somebody back into the picture, but we got the boys together in the interval and they dug deep in the last four races.”Coventry manager Gary Havelock said: “It’s just frustrating, because we talked about the importance of getting off to a good start, and we keep giving everyone a start in the first half of the meeting and then coming back.“Wolves were the better team on the night so congratulations to them, and one thing we need to do is get some away wins and the sooner the better.“There’s so much effort from so many riders, I felt Danny King rode his socks off for four points, and it’s just disappointing how it slipped away.”Meanwhile Kent rounded off their regular National Trophy programme with a convincing 59-29 win over the Isle of Wight at Central Park.Skipper Luke Bowen scored a 15-point maximum for the Kings with James Shanes adding 11+1, whilst Joe Jacobs picked up ten for the Warriors. The teams meet again on Tuesday at the Smallbrook Stadium in the KO Cup, with the Kings defending a 24-point first leg advantage.

EDINBURGH have announced the signing of Mark Riss – the elder brother of current Monarchs star Erik. The German is set to join the club with immediate effect subject to BSPA approval, with Australian rider Jye Etheridge making way after scoring only nine points in 40 rides.Edinburgh boss John Campbell said: “When we first approached the Riss boys we were told that Mark was initially the better rider, although that is not the case now as Erik has had 50 meetings in the UK. “However, Mark will have the help of Erik who has learnt so much about racing in the UK over the last year. Both Erik and Kevin Wolbert were keen to have Mark with us.“I’ll do all I can to get Jye to a track that may better suit his style but the new rules this season mean that he is still lumbered with an average of five.”

SCUNTHORPE have been rocked by the news that recent Danish signing Andreas Lyager has been forced to quit the club and British Speedway with immediate effect. The 18-year-old has to complete his apprenticeship with his employer now unwilling to allow him time off work and school.Lyager said: “When I got home on Saturday, there was a letter from my employer, where I am in learning. “I only have one year left, and I would like to finish my apprenticeship; if I cannot race any more, then I [need to] have an education to fall back on.“I do not have any choice; I need my education, and [my employer] simply will not allow me to do it with so many days off. I am so sorry, I really want the best for Scunthorpe.”(SPEEDWAY 4)
BUXTON have announced Shelby Rutherford is to take time out of the sport following a below-par start to the season.Rutherford and Hitmen boss Jason Pipe made a mutual decision following the club’s Southern tour, and the rider will be out of the team until at least July.Pipe said: “Shelby has had machinery problems since the start of the season and he's tried to rectify these problems by having engines looked at and replacing parts, but he's just not had much luck at all. “Hopefully this time out will help him to sort out his machinery and come back into the team a much better rider, and the rider I know he can be. He has the ability to be at least a 5.00-point man in this league. “Our captain Jade Mudgway is going to look over his bikes with him and help him where he can. Sometimes it can work well to take a bit of time out and come back a better rider for it, which we hope will happen to Shelby.”

KING’S Lynn Young Stars have released reserve Layne Cupitt and replaced him by promoting No.8 Lewis Whitmore.Cupitt, meanwhile, is set to join Cradley with the moves subject to BSPA approval, although the Heathens have yet to make a decision on who he replaces.Young Stars boss Dale Allitt said: “We’re releasing Layne primarily because of work commitments for his father Sean, which is making it difficult for him to get to King’s Lynn. This will hopefully make the logistics easier for him.“Lewis finished third in the British Youth Championship last year, above some good riders who have done well this year in the league, so he’ll get his chance and be given time with us. We’ll work with him, and we feel it’s a good move for the future.”Cradley manager Will Pottinger said: “At this moment we haven’t made a final decision on who will make way, but Layne is now part of the squad and will ride against Buxton on Monday.“He wants a track closer to home, it’s been tough for him and I have to say King’s Lynn have been very understanding, which I’m sure Layne appreciates.”(FIXTURES)
