Leist and Sowery take Silverstone wins in Pirelli-backed BRDC British F3
Matheus Leist and Toby Sowery both claimed their third victories of the BRDC British Formula 3 season in round five at Silverstone.
Race one had to be restarted following a crash on the grid, but Brazilian driver Leist took advantage to pass polesitter Thomas Randle and win by 4.3 seconds. Lando Norris also got ahead of Randle on lap one but then crashed out, promoting the Australian back up to second and India’s Tarun Reddy into the final podium place in third.
After series returnee Harrison Scott retired, championship leader Ricky Collard finished in fourth ahead of Enaam Ahmed and Sisa Ngebulana.
Sowery was seventh, but capitalised on a front-row start on the reverse grid for race two. He took the lead on the opening lap and opened up an advantage of almost 10 seconds before a late safety car, under which the race ended. Norris took a stunning second - having climbed from 17th within the first four laps - with Leist third and Randle fourth.
The safety car was required after contact between Collard and Quinlan Lall. Collard had led on the first lap only to run wide, and the clash later on with Lall left him finishing down in 13th. The final race was abandoned due to thunderstorms prior to the start.
Collard still leads the standings, but by just 19 points over Randle and 22 over Leist, while Sowery is 39 points behind. Three rounds remain, the first of which is at Spa-Francorchamps on July 8-9.

Pirelli could also celebrate having the top driver among those registered for BTRDA points, with Charlie Payne extending his championship lead with fourth overall. Stephen Petch got ahead of Paul Benn for fifth on the final stage, while Thomas Preston was eighth in his Fabia R5 behind Mitsubishi driver Fred Milne.
Matthew Robinson took the BTRDA Silver Star win in his Pirelli-supported Fiat 131 and was the leading historic class entry. Jordan Hone claimed the 1400 class win in his Proton Satria on Pirelli tyres.
Wins shared in Pirelli-supplied Supercar Challenge at SpaThe wins in round three of the Supercar Challenge powered by Pirelli took place at Spa-Francorchamps with the victories split between Monlau Competition’s Renault RS01 and the Ligier LMP3 of DayVTec.
Jose Manuel Perez Aicart led race one from pole position in the RS01, which he later handed over to Jurgen Smet. The Ligier came second in the hands of Milan Dontje and Frits van Eerd, with Henk Thuis finishing third in his Pumaxs RT despite having got ahead of Dontje at the start.
Bas and Joris Schouten won the Supersport division in their BMW M3, Koen Bogaerts and Mark van der Aa won GTB in their BMW M4 and Chris Voet and Bart van den Broeck took Sport honours in their Peugeot RCZ.
In race two, roles were reversed between the RS01 and the Ligier, which was started on this occasion by ex-Formula 1 driver Jan Lammers. In wet conditions, Aicart led Lammers but it would be Dontje that would collect the win in the Ligier, despite having to re-pass Smit in the Renault following a penalty for a pit stop infringement. Thuis finished third once again.
Nicolas van Dierendonck and Manu van de Ryse took the GTB win in their Porsche 991 Cup, Ronald and Luuk van Loon won Supersport in their BMW M3 and the Sport division went to Johan Vannerum and Jean-Luc Behets in a BMW 235i.
Pirelli-supported GP2 on to Baku as GP3 prepares for AustriaThe GP2 Series races on the brand new Baku street circuit in Azerbaijan this weekend with the championship’s three British drivers aiming for more good results.
Alex Lynn makes the trip with only an eight-point deficit to the standings leader Artem Markelov, while Oliver Rowland and Jordan King will hope to repeat the podiums they achieved in Monaco and Barcelona respectively.
GP3 won’t be in action in Baku, with the drivers instead having tested at the Red Bull Ring last week in preparation for the next round at the Austrian circuit on July 2-3. British racers Matt Parry, Alex Albon and Jack Aitken were all classified inside the top five fastest drivers at the test.
