One of Josh Caygill’s favourite European tracks awaits the British racer next weekend, 25th/26th June, when the one-make Audi Sport TT Cup resumes for rounds five and six of the season at the unique Norisring street circuit in Germany.
Situated in Nuremberg, the historic venue is certainly a distinctive destination and always provides spectacular racing. With three main straights interspersed with eight turns, including two hairpins, the circuit is a fast, all-action challenge and one Josh absolutely relishes.
Going into the third event of the campaign, the ex-motorcycle racer from Netherton in West Yorkshire is seventh in the championship standings after a somewhat frustrating outing at the Nurburgring last month.
Sustaining a costly slow puncture in the first encounter and a clutch problem in the second contest, his points-scoring potential was impacted but Josh was more than happy with his own performance as he makes continued improvements in the ultra-competitive category.
Despite the difficulties encountered at the Nurburgring, Josh was able to record two ninth place finishes which meant he departed the famous German track just four points shy of the coveted championship top six.
Having started the season at Hockenheim in early May with fifth and sixth place results, Josh is eyeing a return to those positions, and hopefully even more, next weekend as he targets his first podium in the DTM support category.
“Norisring is a fantastic track, I like it a lot and it’s a place we’ve gone well at before so I’m looking forward to being back there”, he commented, “Although the results at Nurburgring weren’t what we aimed for, or should have had with our pace, it was still important to score more points.
“The results didn’t properly reflect the level of performance we had, or how well I was driving to be fair, so I’m aiming to put that right next weekend and get back in the top five at least. Qualifying will be very important as the first hairpin can always be a bit of a bottleneck. If we can start on the first two or three rows I think we should be in a good position for the races.”
During last year’s visit to the Norisring, the maiden season for the Audi Sport TT Cup, Josh achieved a top five points scoring result and in the predecessor Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup he achieved a top 10 finish in 2013 – his first year of competition on European tracks.
Free practice at the Norisring will take place on Friday, 24th June, with qualifying following very early on Saturday, 25th June, at 07.30 (local time) ahead of round five at 15.20 (local time). On Sunday, 26th June, round six will get underway at 14.00 – both races will be streamed live online HERE
