The No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTLM started from the seventh class position on the grid for Sunday's Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix race and finished in the same position at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada.Qualifying driver Giancarlo Fisichella drove the first stint of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Series race, which was pretty uneventful except for a brief spin at Turn 5, which he then re-joined the field without losing any positions. Italian Fisichella turned over the wheel to teammate Toni Vilander on Lap 37 at approximately 50 minutes into the two hours and 40-minute race.Vilander also had rather uneventful stints with two brief pit stops, one under caution, for fuel and tires. Once again, like in Watkins Glen last weekend for Round 5, the drivers were unable to make much headway on the rest of the GTLM field.
The Risi Competizione team was awarded the DEKRA Green Challenge Award for the third time this season, after previously being honored at Sebring and Watkins Glen. The award is given to the team who exhibits the cleanest, fastest and most efficient pit stop performance and is determined through green racing protocols established by the United States Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency and the Society of Automotive Engineers International as part of their alliance with IMSA.
Rick Mayer, Risi Competizione Race Engineer:"It was a tough race. There were surprisingly, few cautions - only three. Qualifying was truly important for this event and unfortunately we didn't qualify well, but in saying that we qualified where I thought we would. So, finishing seventh is about the best we could do without some luck. I thought we'd get more positions in the pits as our pit stops were good. We had some really quick stops and it was close, but we just weren't quite there. We might have been able to gain a few spots at the end and possibly bettered our position over the Porsche on the last lap if it wouldn't have gone yellow, but the result is about where our pace is currently in the class. We'll have to get ready for Lime Rock and hopefully have a good result there."
Giancarlo Fischella, driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTLM:"It was a good start of the race. I overtook one Corvette. I was overtaking the BMW, but then he closed the door. I lost again the position. I was trying to keep the pace. It was difficult with the car sliding a lot. I think the hard rain the night before the race made it difficult for everyone. I lost the car [spun] in the hairpin. Then I came in for driver change. We started seventh and finished seventh. That's about where the Balance of Performance (BoP) has us currently, but we'll keep pushing."Toni Vilander, driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTLM:"It was a difficult race. It feels like we're in a class of our own. I can't really challenge at the restarts with our engine power. Then, at one point the track changed and setup got a little bit better and we more or less matched the lap times of the others, but the rhythm of the race seemed off today for me. If we would have optimized everything, our place was between fifth and seventh, speed wise. The Porsche was struggling in the end. There could have been some battle at the end, but then there was the last caution which lasted the last two laps. Overall, it was a quite difficult day."
Dave Sims, Team Manager, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTLM"I think overall the team's performance was good. We got a new refueler (at Watkins Glen) and he did a good job this event. Every pit stop went nearly flawless. Wheel changes were good, stops were good, the mechanics did a good job again. But on track wise, we're struggling with straight line speed against our peers, which also makes it more difficult to clear GTD traffic as they are as quick as us on the straights. We feel if we had the straight speed of our peers we could be competitive."We won the DEKRA Award again and it's good for us to win that. It shows, especially for Ferrari, that it's a good car for energy saving and that's what it's all about these days. We've won this award three times this year with the Ferrari 488, plus the four ones we won last year with the Ferrari 458 and we hope to just keep on winning them. It's good for the team."
The next race for the Risi Competizione Ferrari team is Round 8 of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and Round 7 of the GTLM class, at the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn., July 22-23.
