Daniel Cammish once again scored a top ten finish in the ultra-competitive Porsche Supercup despite the car being set up for dry conditions. Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup race was one of the major support events to Formula 1 at Silverstone.
The Leeds-based driver got the weekend off to a good start by going fourth fastest in free practice, only being bested by Supercup regulars Sven Mueller, Matteo Cairoli and Mathieu Jaminet.
Come qualifying and Dan set a time less than four-tenths off pole position, but such is the close nature of the Supercup field it placed him in seventh for Sunday’s grid. The 27-year-old was still confident of powering his Nationwide Crash Repair/PPG sponsored car to a good result at the home of the British Racing Drivers Club.
“Free practice was good,” said Dan. “We were P4 and one second from Sven Mueller who was fastest and had new tyres as well. I had run mine from the start though and set my time on the second lap whereas he had the benefit of putting them on at the end of the session but our pace was good. We made some changes for qualifying and we were good for P5 if we managed to get everything together but we got seventh. It was so close at the front, the top two had a gap but a couple of tenths over a 2-minute lap is nothing.”
On Sunday, morning the cars went to the grid in dry conditions but the heavens opened just as the cars were forming up, leading to the start being delayed. The race got underway behind the safety car, before racing started on lap three. Dan was able to stay with the pack in the opening laps before falling back to ninth at the flag with a car that didn’t suit the wet conditions as well as some of his rivals.
“The race was a bit of a tough one,” said Dan. “I was quietly confident if it was dry I think we could have done a good job and got on the podium. It rained and everyone took their chances on the grid but we didn’t have the speed. We hung on at the start but they just got quicker and we couldn’t stay with them, so we were ninth at the end. It was a good experience and good fun and we’ll focus in on the next race now at Snetterton.”
Dan will return to the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Snetterton as the championship resumes after the summer break. Qualifying takes place at 14:30 on Saturday 30th July, with two races on Sunday 31st July at 9:15 and 15:25.
