Chris Holder will face off against Tai Woffinden tonight as his Australia side booked their place in the Monster Energy Speedway World Cup Final after a dramatic Race-Off in Manchester. The Race-Off is always the most brutal of the World Cup meetings as four teams go toe-to-toe, and bar-to-bar, with the goal of reaching the Final for a shot at ultimate glory. The Aussies went up against Russia, Denmark and Team USA at the National Speedway Stadium and they pretty much dominated right up until the last four heats – where it started to get way too close for comfort. They made an awesome start, only dropping two points from their first set of races but they hit a bump when young charger Max Fricke crashed out of his first race and sustained a collarbone injury, which meant reserve Brady Kurtz was thrown into the lion’s den for his first taste of World Cup action. That didn’t slow their momentum, though. Roared on by a pro-Aussie crowd they continued to pile up the points and at one stage they’d pulled an eight-point lead on main rivals Denmark. The Danes never go down without a fight and with three races to go they somehow managed to drag it back to just one point. The two nations traded victories in Heats 18 & 19 and then it came down to the last race; if Australia won they went through, but if Denmark won it the least they’d get was a run-off and the best case scenario was overall victory.GP star Jason Doyle was the man for Australia, with Danish captain Niels-Kristian Iversen trying to deny him, but it was the Aussie who showed balls of steel and brought the house down with a wheel-perfect ride. He powered out of the starting gate and led from start to finish to bring it home for Australia and ensure that they’ll be in the mix tomorrow for the biggest prize in team speedway.Despite not having his best night on a personal level, team captain Holder was stoked to get through and get another bite of the cherry tomorrow; “Man, I’m relieved! I put the boys under a bit of pressure with a tough night, but JD was a man on a mission and got the job done for us tonight.“Before the last race I was praying that Doyley could do something for us so I wouldn’t be in trouble! It just didn’t happen for me, it was a frustrating night because I seemed to ride my butt off for nothing but tomorrow is a new day.“We’re really happy to get through, it was super-tight at the end there so I’m looking forward to getting some work done at practice in the morning and hopefully it’ll be much better tomorrow. Anything can happen in speedway, it’s the World Cup Final so it’s all up for grabs and we’ll see what we can do. We’re be giving it our all that’s for sure.”Team USA fielded a young side and there were some real glimpses into the future, particularly with 17 year-old Luke Becker who impressed everybody with his never-say-die attitude and 100% commitment – remember the name. Now we know the four nations going for the big one on Saturday; Great Britain, Sweden, Poland and Australia. Can the home crowd inspire Tai Woffinden and the British team to an unlikely victory or will reigning champions Sweden use their experience to retain the title? Can Poland’s young guns live up to their billing as favourites or will Australia rise to the occasion and win their first championship in over a decade? It’s wide open and we can’t wait to see how it unfolds!
