Down to the wire at Shelsley Walsh

Two hectic days of motor sport action hosted by the Midland Automobile Club will be taking place at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb this weekend as several different championships are going ‘down to the wire’ in deciding ultimate title winners.

The two separate one day club events start on Saturday and include participants in the HSA Speed Championship, the Revington TR Register, the Classic Marques Speed Challenge, the Service Hydraulics Speed Championship, motorcycles and others, proving a very wide range and diversity of machines competing for final standings.

Sunday brings the added attraction of both Porsche and Ferrari championship competitions, together with the final round of the Paul Matty Sports Cars Lotus Championship, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary year.

Championship organiser, Paul Matty, said: “David Hampton driving a Lotus 69 Atlantic has won the overall title and I am delighted to report that my wife June has won the ‘Fastest Lady’ overall title in her Lotus 2022 FJ.

“This weekend will be the final event in what has been an absolutely fantastic 25th anniversary year and I must applaud all of the competitors for their continued spirit and determination in making it such a wonderfully close yet very social championship, and I think the splendid setting of Shelsley Walsh is the perfect place to round off the year.”

Two previous winners head the points table in the Service Hydraulics Speed Championship with Matt Carter in his Radical PR6 having only a very slender lead over Fred Currell in his VW Golf, closely followed by Daniel Hollis in a Caterham 7.

The Classic Marques Speed Challenge sees a wide range of entertaining cars in competition ranging from an MG Midget and Lotus Elan, through a Mazda MX5 and Honda S2000, to a Sunbeam Tiger, TVR Griffith and E-Type Jaguar.

Triumph cars including TR3A, TR4A, TR6, TR7 and TR8 together with a Dolomite Sprint will be taking part in the TR Register Sprint and Hill Climb Series.

Around 25 cars will be competing in the single-seater racing car sections with 15 cars fighting it out in the 1100cc class alone, so a few close battles are expected there.

Over 30 solo motorcycles and sidecar machines will be taking part in their own competition on Saturday as part of the National Hill Climb Association Championship, with examples from Honda, Ducati, KTM, Aprilia, Triumph and Husaberg competing.

Sunday will host a further variety of exotic cars with 20 Porsche examples, a dozen Morgans, nine TVRs and eight Ferraris including 328 GTB, F355 Berlinetta, F360 Modena, California and F430 Coupe models.

Practice and qualifying starts at 9.15 each day followed by two timed competition runs in programme order each afternoon.
