The Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTLM will start from the front row in the second position on the grid for Saturday's IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Lone Star Grand Prix at Circuit of the America (COTA).Qualifying driver Toni Vilander set his fastest time in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTLM on the seventh lap with a time of 2:04.694 in the 20-minute qualifying session at the 3.4-mile, 120-turn Formula One circuit in Austin, Texas. The second place qualifying effort is the best for the Houston, Texas-based Ferrari team so far this season.Temperatures are expected to be hot and sunny again and in the mid- 90 degrees Fahrenheit tomorrow for the two hour and forty-minute race.
Rick Mayer, Risi Competizione Race Engineer: "Qualifying was difficult. It's always difficult when we're following the Conti [Continental Tire Sports Car Series Challenge series] race since the tire is so dissimilar to ours. It makes it really slippery for us. It didn't change the balance, but it did make the grip low. Congratulations to the Ford for putting a lap together. I think Toni did the best he could with what he had in qualifying. We ended up second, which I think is a great position to start from and I think we'll have a great race car it was good on longs runs earlier in the day."
Toni Vilander, qualifying driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTLM:"It is the normal challenge inside the race weekend, as the track temperature and track conditions changes so much, this qualifying for our class is one of the most difficult because we run with track conditions that we haven't had prior to qualifying. Overall I'm quite happy. I would have preferred to go a few tenths faster obviously, but I guess today, to match [polesitter] Ryan [Briscoe's] lap time would have been difficult. The track in qualifying was very low grip. The conditions should be better suited for us in the race. It's a positive result today. The current BoP [Balance of Performance] appears to now have us in a competitive situation. I can be a little more confident we'll have a competitive car and hopefully, after the start, concentrate on my own race. Overall, I'm pleased with the weekend so far so we'll see what happens tomorrow."
Giancarlo Fisichella, driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTLM:"It's been a good weekend so far. We were always in the top three or four positions. This morning [in practice] we were the quickest. Now we are on the first row. Toni did a great job. Obviously, the circuit with the Conti [Continental] tires and the temperature was much different than this morning. It was more slippery, especially on the rear end but, it's a great result. I think it's the best qualifying session of the season. I'm looking forward to the race."
