Budapest is the destination for Audi Sport TT Cup racer Josh Caygill next weekend, 24th/25th September, when the all-action DTM support category makes its first ever visit to Formula One venue the Hungaroring.
Fresh from last weekend’s two races at the Nurburgring in Germany, where the Yorkshireman consolidated ninth in the championship standings and posted a best finish of seventh place, he is now eagerly awaiting his first trip to the famous Hungarian track.
Had it not been for an unfortunate red flag stoppage on the frantic opening lap of the second of the Nurburgring contests last time out, there is every prospect the Netherton-based driver could have matched his season-best fifth place at least, having made a great start to the race.
As it turned out, something of a mix-up with the grid order at the re-start dealt Josh’s hopes a blow but he still raced extremely competitively and only just missed out on a deserved top six result after some outstanding battles.
Now, the unique challenge of the 2.7-mile Hungaroring awaits the Audi Sport TT Cup contenders and Josh is determined to try and hit the ground running as the exciting one-make category makes its maiden trip to Eastern Europe.
“Hungary should be mega, I’m really looking forward to heading out there for the first time”, said the 27-year-old, “It’s obviously a track with a lot of history, a big Formula One venue, and although overtaking there is challenging there should be some opportunities with the ‘push-to-pass’ boost.
“I was a little bit disappointed after Nurburgring to be fair, we had the pace to take more away from it, but seventh in race two was pretty good – we should have had sixth at least though. We had a bit of contact in the first race, which messed things up as I was in a good position at that point, but we raced well again and that was the important thing.”
Like Zandvoort earlier in the season, Hungaroring provides pretty much the whole Audi Sport TT Cup entry with a new challenge and the drivers will embark on their first mileage at the track next Friday, 23rd September, during free practice.
The all-important qualifying session will commence at 10.30 (local time) on Saturday, 24th September, with the first race of the weekend scheduled to follow at 15.20 (local time). On Sunday, 25th September, race two will begin at 10.45 (local time) and both contests will be streamed live online at www.audimedia.tv
