Sergio Canamasas reaps points reward in Sepang GP2

After his qualifying woes, the Barcelona-born driver managed to put in a brilliant recovery drive and took a top-ten finish on Saturday. Canamasas delivered a solid performance and eyes more points in race 2 on Sunday.

Sergio Canamasas managed t reverse the situation after it was a bit of a problematic qualifying session for the only Spaniard in the GP2 Series. Canamasas made it into the points at Sepang International Circuit. Carlin driver, who qualified 19th following set-up issues and traffic problems yesterday, made a good race start on hard tires and he gained several places from the very beginning. Later, after making feature race´s mandatory pit stop, Canamasas finally took the checkered flag in 10th place ahead of former series leader Pierre Gasly, 11th, or his teammate at Carlin Marvin Kirchhöfer, 15th.

“The goal was to finish in the points and I managed to achieve it. I have to say I almost was forced to retire on the starting grid as my car experienced a clutch sensor problem. We had to do a second formation lap as Markelov stopped on the back straight but from then on things worked out really well for us. I passed various cars and despite one or two rivals kept the door closed on me, it wasn´t a bad start at all. Our race pace wasn´t sensational but I was quite able to keep up with the cars ahead. With a faultless performance I managed to take tenth at the end and secure another points finish”, Canamasas explained after race 1. All this notwithstanding, Canamasas stressed “I have mixed feelings because with a slightly better qualifying result, perhaps we would have improved our tenth place and it would have resulted in a fantastic position on the reverse grid. But there is no point in lamenting. I already focus on Sunday´s race. I expect a better result yet!”
