Motorsport.tv Weekend Highlights April 7,8,9

It may no longer be winter, but the message of The Mamas and Papas’ 1966 folk classic California Dreamin’ is still just as vivid as it was over 50 years ago. The escapism that the song describes is especially prevalent this weekend, as the IMSA SportsCar Championship heads to the Golden State on the streets of Long Beach. But if the 15-hour flight doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, then you won’t be missing anything as Motorsport.tv shows all the action live. What are you waiting for?

This weekend’s offering from Long Beach brings together the Prototype, GTLM and GTD classes for one of the shortest races of the year, at just 1 hour and 40 minutes in total. With time of the essence, teams will be anxious to make up places as quickly as possible, but with little room for error on the concrete-lined roads, will have to be extra wary of making a mistake navigating through traffic. Benefitting from the superiority of the Cadillac engine and aero package, Wayne Taylor Racing have won both races so far this year at Daytona and Sebring. Having partnered with Max Angelelli, Jeff Gordon and Alex Lynn in the early rounds, brothers Ricky and Jordan Taylor are back by themselves this weekend. Returning to the scene of their victory last year, can they continue their perfect start to the season, or will fellow Caddy runners Action Express bite back?

Expect plenty more thrills and spills with daily highlights of the FIA World Rally Championship as it descends on Corsica for Rally France. So named ‘the rally of 10,000 corners’, the Tour de Corse features prominently among the WRC’s most challenging events, with tight and twisty tarmac roads weaving across the island and plunging drops off to the side ready to catch out the unwary. As the defending event winner and victor on the Monte Carlo Rally, the only previous tarmac rally so far this year, Frenchman Sebastien Ogier will be the pre-event favourite, but Ford’s main man will have his card marked by Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville. The Hyundai man made costly mistakes to miss out on victory on the Monte and again in Sweden, which has left him playing catch-up in the championship as a result. Will this be the weekend the Belgian gets his season back on track and delivers a first win for the new i20 WRC?

Next, it’s over to Nice for the season finale of the off-season FIM X-Trial World Championship, as Honda rider Toni Bou went in search of his 11th consecutive title. Having won each of the three previous rounds, the odds were heavily stacked against his chief title rival Adam Raga, who needed his fellow Spaniard to finish lower than fifth for the first time since 2007 to have any chance of regaining the title he last won back in 2006. Could Bou further extend his record-breaking spell at the top of the sport?

Back on four wheels, join the NASCAR Camping World Trucks as America’s top drivers take on the short-track oval at Martinsville. However, there would be no time to stop for the famous Martinsville hot dog, with Hendrick star Chase Elliott in the pack. Although he’s not registered for points, could the Cup Series star steal the thunder from the Truck Series regulars?

But why stop there? Make sure you’re up to date with all the news and views on Formula 1 and the world of motorsport at–large in The Flying Lap. Fronted by well-known journalist Peter Windsor and featuring behind-the-scenes access with key paddock insiders, The Flying Lap will leave no stone unturned to get to the beating heart of modern motorsport.

A replay of last week’s FIA World Rallycross opening round from Barcelona as former DTM sparring partners Mattias Ekstrom and Timo Scheider battled tooth and nail to the finish, plus tin-top action from the TCR Asia Series in Sepang and clubbie fun from the Toyo Tyres Porsche championship at Oulton Park.
