EDINBURGH’S second 45-45 draw in the space of 48 hours was enough to take them back to the top of the SGB Championship.
After their home stalemate with Glasgow on Friday, the Monarchs were involved in another close encounter at Newcastle on Sunday with nothing to split the sides at the end.
The Diamonds had raced into an eight-point lead before the visitors, inspired by a revitalised Max Clegg at reserve, turned the meeting in their favour.
They led by four points going into Heat 15 only for Robert Lambert and Steve Worrall to rescue a draw for the Diamonds as they got the better of Sam Masters and Erik Riss.
Worrall (10+1) bounced back from a Heat 13 fall to top-score for the hosts, whilst Clegg piled up 14+1 including four race wins for the Monarchs.
Newcastle boss George English said: “We got off to a good enough start, probably better than we had hoped for, but the track wasn't right tonight as we had problems and it was way too dry.
“When the track isn't its usual self it's always the home riders who suffer more, which we did mid-match, and we ended up only two up which was way too uncomfortable.
“When they levelled it and went ahead it looked like we were in major trouble, but Robert and Steve made such a brilliant gate and took a deserved draw.”
Edinburgh boss Alex Harkess said: “It’s strange that it is a draw and we are possibly disappointed, but only due to the situation we were in.
“Being eight points down early on a draw would have been more than acceptable, but that’s the way it goes.
“Full marks to Max, he believed in himself, he went out to win races and he did. He was making starts and without a doubt he was the star man.”

MAN of the moment Kyle Howarth went through the card at Scunthorpe to help Sheffield to four SGB Championship points from a 50-40 away win.
Howarth, currently in the form of his career, raced to a five-ride 15-point maximum at the Eddie Wright Raceway – and he wasn’t the only unbeaten Tigers rider on the day, as youngster Josh Bates also collected a paid maximum (10+2) from four rides.
With Josh Grajczonek (11+1) and Lasse Bjerre (9) also in the major points, the visitors had too much firepower for their local rivals, for whom guest Bradley Wilson-Dean top-scored with 9+2 with Lewis Kerr on 9+1.
Sheffield boss Simon Stead said: “It was a great result. It was a superb performance from us, and we couldn’t ask for any more than to come away with all four points.
“A couple of the lads struggled, but a couple of them really stepped up their game. I’m delighted to see Kyle and Josh Bates score maximums, and Josh Grajczonek and Lasse were superb as well.
“There was some great team riding, they all worked together to get the result and it was a good day at the office.”
Scunthorpe manager Dave Peet said: “Sheffield won it won their top four – they all rode extremely well and they did the damage against us. Their top boys were better than our top boys.
“It wasn’t to be. It’s fair enough to say we could have done better in this match, and we must come back with a stronger performance against Ipswich next Sunday.”

MILDENHALL took control of their National Trophy group with a 55-34 win over Kent at West Row.
All seven Fen Tigers recorded at least a paid win, whilst the Kings’ hopes were hit when Jack Thomas crashed out in Heat 3 and was withdrawn as a precaution with a leg injury.
Jon Armstrong led the way for the hosts with 12+1 whilst reserve Sam Woods racked up 10+2; whilst Luke Bowen won his first four rides for the visitors to score 12, before being disqualified from Heat 15.
Mildenhall promoter Kevin Jolly said: “This was another solid home performance from us and the margin of the victory only helps to strengthen our position at the top of our National Trophy group.
“We are well up for winning the National Trophy and a good performance at Kent in our final group match should seal our position in the Final.
“I don’t like singling out riders but we were all very pleased for Sam Woods today, Sam is a lovely lad a real team man and always gives you his all, and today’s paid twelve was a just reward for his efforts.”
The latest round of the British Youth Championship at Rye House resulted in a 500cc win for Daniel Gilkes, one week prior to his 15th birthday, as he took victory in a twice re-run Final.
Leon Flint took the honours at 250cc level whilst the support 150cc/125cc class was won by Corban Pavitt.
British Youth boss Neil Vatcher said: “If an alien had come down from space today, he really wouldn’t have known that he was watching youth riders. That highlights the dedication, attitude and professionalism of everyone out there.
“I want to say a big thank-you once again to Rye House for stepping in at short notice to stage this event, and to everyone who came out today to support the Young Lions. We are already looking forward to being back here for Round 4 on June 11.”

SCUNTHORPE have moved to sign Tero Aarnio as a temporary replacement for broken collarbone victim Stefan Nielsen.
Finnish star Aarnio is a Scorpions asset having ridden for the club between 2010 and 2012.
Promoter Rob Godfrey sad: “I think Tero will be a cracking addition to our side. He was popular with the fans in his previous spell with Scorpions.
“He starts at reserve, and subject to BSPA approval, he will make his debut for Scorpions at home to Ipswich this coming Sunday (May 21). After that we have away meetings at Redcar and Newcastle – two tracks that Tero loves riding.
“He will start as temporary cover for Stefan Nielsen, who remains very much in our plans for this season, once he’s fit again. This is Tero’s chance to put himself in the shop window, and who knows what it may lead to.”

LEICESTER return to home action with the visit of SGB Premiership leaders Wolverhampton in a Midlands derby tonight (Monday).
Lions skipper Danny King has been putting in extra laps of Beaumont Park in a bid to get dialled in, having been limited to just one competitive appearance on his new home circuit so far.
The meeting will see King’s side come up against a Wolves septet headed by World Championship leader Fredrik Lindgren, who won the Grand Prix of Poland in Warsaw on Saturday.
King said: “My only home meeting was a while ago but I was lucky enough to get some practice in over the past week. It was just what I needed. You never like going to tapes on a track you feel unsure of but after doing plenty of laps and trying a lot of lines, I came away happy.
“It is one we are looking forward to. Hopefully, we can get a win over our local rivals because we know how much it would mean to everyone.”
Wolves reserve Nathan Greaves said: “Our results are speaking for themselves now and we deserve to be at the top of the league with how we’ve all been riding.
“We just need to keep working hard, make sure we don’t take our foot off the gas and pick up as many wins as we can.”
Meanwhile in the Travel Plus National League Kent host King’s Lynn at Central Park – with visiting boss Scott Campos remaining upbeat despite a torrid start to the season.
Not only have they been plagued by injuries and retirements, but they have also lost all four of their opening fixtures.
Campos, however, took encouragement from aspects of the Young Stars’ performance at Birmingham last Wednesday and is looking to build on that against the Kings, with Chris Widman once again guesting for the injured Danny Phillips.
Campos said: “They may have beaten us pretty comfortably in the end (56-34) but we were proud of how we started that meeting.
“Many people had written us off before the start but we went out there and kept them close in the early part of the meeting.
“Those are the sorts of things we have to focus on through these far from ideal times but this was always a side that was built to improve as the season goes on.”
Ben Hopwood returns for the home side after missing yesterday’s defeat at Mildenhall, whilst 15-year-old Anders Rowe makes his league debut.
