SPEEDWAY POSTPONEMENT - SATURDAY JUNE 10

SGB CHAMPIONSHIP
Workington v Glasgow - OFF

(SPEEDWAY 1)

BELLE Vue were held to a 46-46 draw by Poole on Friday – as the Pirates remarkably recorded their third SGB Premiership stalemate on the road already this season.
The Aces looked set for a clear win as they raced into a ten-point lead after six heats and restricted a tactical ride from Brady Kurtz to four points.
But back-to-back 5-1s for the visitors in Heats 10 and 11 brought the scores level, and they went into the last race two points up.
Kenneth Bjerre and Max Fricke then salvaged a draw for the hosts with a 4-2 in Heat 15, split by guest Troy Batchelor.
Bjerre won four races on his way to a 12-point haul for the Aces, whilst Batchelor (12+1) and Kurtz (11) both hit double figures for the Pirates.
Belle Vue boss Mark Lemon said: “We got away with a draw, which at home is quite disappointing for us because we had a nice comfy lead. But their riders just seemed to find something we didn’t.
“But you can’t deny the excitement we got from how hard the guys were pushed by the Pirates, and both Max and Kenneth did a hell of a job in Heat 15 to get us the 4-2 to draw the meeting.
“There’s still a lot of work to do for every team yet before the final four are decided. It’s no time to panic. The boys are working overtime to produce the goods and I’ve every faith that they can.”
Poole promoter Matt Ford said: “The winner in me really wanted us to hold on for the victory, but to be honest I think anyone would have taken the draw had it been
offered to us prior to the nightmare of a journey we made in getting here.”

EDINBURGH extended their SGB Championship lead to five points with a 56-34 win over Redcar in an incident-strewn meeting at Armadale.
Sam Masters scored a 15-point maximum for the Monarchs with Erik Riss adding 11+1, whilst Ben Barker (12) and Jonas B Andersen (11) led the way for the Devils.
But several riders were unable to complete the meeting, with the visitors losing No.1 Jason Garrity to a broken bone in his hand following a first-race spill.
Ricky Wells and Charles Wright both missed their final outings after incidents later in the meeting, whilst Max Clegg was unable to take his place in the re-run of Heat 14 after a tangle with Bears guest Matt Williamson.
Riss said: “The track was quite tough, in the beginning it was quite deep and I struggled. I had a crash in my second when I lost my steel shoe.
“Then I changed something on the bike and it was good. That steel shoe cost me a maximum but it happens.”

LAKESIDE returnee Paul Hurry raced to a 15-point maximum as the Hammers collected a 52-38 victory over local rivals Kent at Purfleet.
Hurry was well backed up by Ben Morley (13+1) who dropped just one point from five rides, whilst Zach Wajtknecht (10+1) overcame illness to complete the home side’s powerful top three display.
Jack Thomas scored 12 for the Kings, for whom Nathan Stoneman was withdrawn following a Heat 7 tangle with his team-mate.
Lakeside boss Jon Cook said: “The meeting was close but we handed it over to the big guns and while I felt all of the lads played their part with crucial points, the top three were fantastic.
“Zach had been under the weather all week and the way he passed Luke Bowen and Jack Thomas was out of this world. Full credit to Paul for his full maximum and young Connor Locke performed well, he didn’t get the points his riding warranted.
“It was a derby that could compare to any other in speedway with a lot of feeling on both sides and plenty of incident. To be fair to Kent, they played their part in an exceptional meeting in which the quality defied the level.”
Meanwhile Plymouth got off the mark with their first National League win of the season, overcoming Stoke 52-38 at the St Boniface Arena.
The Potters had no answer to the Devils’ top two as recent signing Adam Roynon stormed to a 15-point maximum whilst Steve Boxall was also unbeaten with 13+2.
Guest Tom Bacon scored 10+1 for the visitors with Luke Priest adding 10, but they still await their first points on the road.
Stoke boss Malcolm Vasey said: “It was a battling display but in the end we just could not cope in the final few heats with Adam Roynon, who rode extremely well, and Steve Boxall, who went unbeaten all evening.
“For us Tom Bacon, Luke Priest and David Wallinger all rode well but we could not live with Plymouth’s top two riders on the night.”

LEICESTER are looking to build on last week’s draw with Poole when Somerset visit Beaumont Park in the SGB Premiership tonight (Saturday).
Home stars Kim Nilsson and Danny King secured a last-heat 5-1 against the Pirates to square the meeting, and they now face a Rebels side who put them out of the KO Cup earlier in the season when Nilsson suffered a puncture in the decisive final race.
The Lions are set to welcome back a number of team members who missed the clash with the Pirates, although Danny Ayres remains on the sidelines due to injury with Ellis Perks booked to guest.
They will also be waiting on news of Jason Garrity, who crashed out of Redcar’s Championship encounter at Edinburgh on Friday. Brady Kurtz comes in to guest for the Rebels, with Richard Lawson on Championship duty.
Leicester reserve Josh Bates said: “I’ve been over the moon with how my season has gone for Leicester so far, it’s been really good for me.
“I haven’t managed to do as well in the Championship for some reason which is frustrating, but like I say, I’m happy with my form for Leicester.
“It’ll be good to be back against Somerset on Saturday after missing last week’s meeting, and I’ll hopefully keep going well and do my bit for the team.”

WORKINGTON meet Glasgow at Derwent Park tonight (Saturday) in the first of two crucial head-to-head SGB Championship clashes this weekend.
The Comets are only outside the top four in the league table on points difference, whilst two strong performances over the weekend could take the Tigers to the top.
Workington have injury concerns ahead of the meetings with Rob Shuttleworth definitely out, and Matt Williamson a major doubt.
Team boss Tony Jackson explained: “We are still missing Rob, who is out with a broken thumb, which is a legacy of his crash two weeks ago and in his place we have drafted in Buxton’s Tom Woolley for the home meeting.
“However, we are now also sweating on the fitness of Matt, who is set to make his first appearance in the main body of the side this evening at Derwent Park.
“While riding as a guest for Redcar, Matt was involved in a big crash in heat 14 at Edinburgh last night, on a night where there appear to have been a few crashes, and he said he felt very second-hand afterwards.
“We will just have to see how he is for Saturday and Sunday but having been in contact with him I am not particularly optimistic of his chances, although he is a tough lad and knowing Matt as I do he will ride if he can - but if he can’t then it is a big blow for him and for us!”
Glasgow captain Aaron Summers is relishing his clashes with Comets star Craig Cook, after the two enjoyed a spectacular battle at Ashfield earlier in the season.
He said: “I've done alright at Derwent Park in the past - I've had bad ones and good ones - so I don't mind the place. I'm confident we can go there and get something out of the meeting given the way we've been racing.
“I only race Craig Cook (at home) in Heats 11, 13 and 15 - if I'm picked - and he knows his way around our place.
“I do quite like being able to win races a bit easier sometimes - but I don't mind the tough races. It's not as fun when you make the gate and sail away out in front by yourself all the time. It would be good to have some close heats.”
Meanwhile Berwick can continue to close in on their rivals at the wrong end of the table with a win over Newcastle at Shielfield Park.
The Bandits are four points behind ninth-placed Scunthorpe, and tonight’s match will leave both sides having raced the same number of meetings.
The Diamonds are seventh but know an away win could vault them into the top four depending on the result of the fixture at Workington.
