Rolex 24 At Daytona: GTP and LMP2 Team-by-Team

Anticipation is building for the 62nd Rolex 24 At Daytona, with the second year of Grand Touring Prototype leading the way in a deep field.

No. 01 Cadillac Racing Cadillac V-Series.R

Sebastien Bourdais/Renger van der Zande/Scott Dixon/Alex Palou

2024 Iwsc Cadillacracing Daytona Livery 988x252

The car fielded by Chip Ganassi Racing will hope to advance from being top Cadillac last year in third, to top of the field overall in the second year with the V-Series.R GTP car. Ganassi’s team has eight prior Rolex 24 victories, including six overall (2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015) and two in the former GT Le Mans class (2017, 2018).

Bourdais and van der Zande continue for their third consecutive year together as full-season teammates. The Dutchman’s next IMSA win will be his 20th as he embarks on his 11th full-time season in the series and will hit the 100-start mark later this year. Six-time IndyCar champion Dixon has, surprisingly, not been part of an IMSA winning lineup since the 2020 Motul Petit Le Mans and hasn’t won at Daytona, like Ganassi, since 2018. Two-time and defending IndyCar champion Palou is a late add for his second Rolex 24 start but has shown great pace.

No. 5 Proton Competition Porsche 963

Gianmaria Bruni/Neel Jani/Romain Dumas/Alessio Picariello

2024 Iwsc Protoncompetition Daytona Livery 988x252

Proton Competition’s recent run of running cars with distinctive liveries will continue into 2024. After Proton dipped its feet into GTP at the tail end of 2023 with a WeatherTech-adorned No. 59 Porsche 963, the team changes car numbers (59 to 5), liveries (white and black to black and gold) and drivers (Harry Tincknell moves on, while Dumas and Picariello join).

Mustang Sampling makes its IMSA return with its third different prototype program, having won several championships with Action Express Racing before making a brief detour to JDC-Miller MotorSports. This new number means JDC-Miller’s Porsche reverts back to its traditional No. 85.

No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963

Mathieu Jaminet/Nick Tandy/Kevin Estre/Laurens Vanthoor

2024 Iwsc Penskemotorsport 6 Daytona Livery 988x252

A persistent rally pushed Porsche Penske Motorsport from a difficult opening “36 hours of Florida,” results-wise, into winning its first race with the new Porsche 963 at Long Beach and starting a championship challenge. Tandy will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of his first, and thus far only, Rolex 24 victory with Porsche in GTLM (2014) this year, but the Englishman is keen to add an overall triumph to his impressive, extensive list of accolades. The same is true for Jaminet, who prevailed in an epic scrap to win the Grand Touring Daytona Pro (GTD PRO) class debut at the 2022 Rolex 24 in a Pfaff Porsche 911 GT3 R.

Extra drivers Estre and Vanthoor are hungry to achieve their first Rolex 24 victories. They were part of the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans GTE PRO winning “Pink Pig” Porsche lineup together. Estre has never won a WeatherTech Championship race while Vanthoor, a two-time IMSA champion in GTLM (2019) and GT Daytona (GTD, 2021), has 10 IMSA wins but not the one to complete his endurance race set of victories with others secured at Le Mans, Sebring, the Nurburgring and Spa-Francorchamps.

No. 7 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963

Felipe Nasr/Dane Cameron/Josef Newgarden/Matt Campbell

2024 Iwsc Porschepenskemotorsport 7 Daytona Livery 988x252

The No. 7 Penske Porsche 963 didn’t quite have the results as its teammates in 2023 but still achieved some success and stayed in title contention until the final race of the year. One key lineup change may unlock the ultimate potential for this entry as it pairs two past IMSA champions together for the first time.

Nasr (2018 and 2021) and Cameron (2014, 2016 and 2019) are both multi-time IMSA champions – including in separate stints in the No. 31 Whelen entry – but are now paired in the Penske Porsche for 2024 as Cameron marks his return to full-time IMSA competition for the first time since 2021. Nasr and Campbell, also an IMSA champion (2022, GTD PRO), have Rolex 24 wins on their resumes (2022 with Pfaff in GTD PRO); Newgarden is a two-time IndyCar Series champion and 2023 Indianapolis 500 race winner. He is set for his third IMSA start, having started the 2023 season in the Tower Motorsports LMP2 at the Rolex 24 and made his Penske Porsche debut at Motul Petit Le Mans to cap off the calendar.

No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura ARX-06

Filipe Albuquerque/Ricky Taylor/Brendon Hartley/Marcus Ericsson

2024 Iwsc Waynetaylorracing 10 Daytona Livery 988x252

A perpetual contender, the No. 10 Konica Minolta entry won four of five Rolex 24 races from 2017 to 2021. But two consecutive years without tasting victory has left the team hungry to return to the top to kick off their championship pursuit, of which they’ve also come up short annually since 2017.

There’s not too much change here with Albuquerque (2018, 2021) and Ricky Taylor (2017, 2021) capturing four total overall Rolex 24 wins as they embark on their fourth consecutive year as full-season teammates. Hartley’s won three 24 Hours of Le Mans but has never finished better than second at Daytona in six attempts. Ericsson, the 2022 Indianapolis 500 winner, is set for his second Rolex 24 appearance after his debut that same year. He’s a new member of Andretti’s IndyCar team in 2024.

No. 24 BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8

Jesse Krohn/Philipp Eng/Augusto Farfus/Dries Vanthoor

2024 Iwsc Bmwteamrll 24 Daytona Livery 988x252

Luck and results eluded the No. 24 BMW in 2023, and with several changes in the driving lineup the BMW M Team RLL program seeks to bring this car up to the level of its No. 25 car in the second year of the GTP program. Success for No. 24 in the 2024 Rolex 24 would certainly fit the numerology game.

Farfus, who will shift to an IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup role, celebrates his 10th consecutive year with BMW M Team RLL this year and seeks to add a third Rolex 24 victory after back-to-back triumphs in 2019 and 2020 in GTLM. Eng is the lone full-season holdover in this car and has a past Rolex 24 win in 2019. Krohn was part of that 2020 winning lineup and the Finnish veteran is back in IMSA full-time for the first time since that season, having raced only sporadically in this series since. Vanthoor, Laurens’ younger brother, has experienced a wealth of GT success and steps up to GTP for this opportunity.

No. 25 BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8

Connor De Phillippi/Nick Yelloly/Maxime Martin/Rene Rast

2024 Iwsc Bmwteamrll 25 Daytona Livery 988x252

The progress made by BMW M Team RLL should be evident upon its return to Daytona in 2024, a year on from fighting through first-race gremlins after a relatively late start to its testing program. But the team’s entry that nearly snatched the GTP championship may well be poised to contend at the Rolex 24.

De Phillippi (a 2019 Rolex 24 class winner) and Yelloly continue as full-season co-drivers. Martin is the Michelin Endurance Cup third driver while Rast is its fourth, bringing additional speed in spades.

No. 31 Whelen Cadillac Racing Cadillac V-Series.R

Pipo Derani/Jack Aitken/Tom Blomqvist

2024 Iwsc Whelencadillacracing 31 Daytona Livery 988x252

The defending champs are back once more, but with a few noticeable changes. Chris Mitchum, director of racing operations for Action Express Racing, has spoken of the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac team’s consistent integrating of new personnel alongside their team veterans to see how they keep the team atop the IMSA heap.

On the driving front, Derani has established himself as a team leader ready to rise to the occasion. But the dynamic Brazilian, a two-time IMSA champion, is hungry to return to the top of the Rolex 24 for a second time as it will have been eight years since his first and thus far only win here in 2016. Aitken’s late-season recovery drive at Motul Petit Le Mans was integral in helping the No. 31 to the title, and his methodical development all season in his endurance drives last year positioned him nicely to advance into a full-season role for 2024, albeit Derani’s fifth different full-season co-driver since 2021. The team has added Daytona’s newest sports car star in two-time defending Rolex 24 winner Blomqvist, the 2022 IMSA Daytona Prototype international (DPi) champion, as third driver for most Michelin Endurance Cup races. Blomqvist is one of a handful of drivers who will experience his second different GTP car in 2024, shifting from Acura to the Cadillac V-Series.R.

No. 40 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura ARX-06

Louis Deletraz/Jordan Taylor/Colton Herta/Jenson Button

2024 Iwsc Waynetaylorracing 40 Daytona Livery 988x252

With an eclectic and entertaining lineup, WTRAndretti’s new second car should garner a significant amount of attention both at the Rolex 24 and the bulk of the IMSA season. Jordan Taylor, one of IMSA’s favorite sons, makes his homecoming both to his dad’s team and prototypes after four years with Corvette Racing in GT. A four-time IMSA champion (2013, 2017, 2020, 2021) and three-time Rolex 24 winner (2017 and 2019 overall, 2021 in GTLM), the now-32-year-old Taylor anchors the No. 40 entry. Alongside for the full season is Deletraz, the Swiss driver who could well be a breakout IMSA star in 2024. Just 26, he already has three worldwide LMP2 championships to his name and made a big impression with his overall and GTP pole at Motul Petit Le Mans last year.

Endurance extras add spice and storylines. Herta, 23, has experience well beyond his years as he’s set for his sixth Rolex 24 start this year and first in an Acura. Four of his previous five have come in BMWs and he already has two class wins in two different categories (2019 GTLM, 2022 LMP2). Button, 43, spent the majority of his Formula 1 career in Honda-powered machinery and makes his second GTP start with as many manufacturers after a Petit Le Mans debut in the JDC-Miller Porsche last year. The 2009 F1 World Champion with Brawn Mercedes has a pair of 24 Hours of Le Mans starts to his name, including with the Garage 56 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 last year, and will make his Rolex 24 debut this year.

No. 85 JDC-Miller MotorSports Porsche 963

Richard Westbrook/Tijmen van der Helm/Phil Hanson/Ben Keating

2024 Iwsc Jdcmillermotorsports Daytona Livery 988x252

After a solid debut at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, JDC-Miller steadily progressed through its return to IMSA’s top class. A maiden podium eluded the “JDC banana boat” but the pairing of van der Helm and Mike Rockenfeller still achieved four top-five finishes from six starts. With Rockenfeller off to the new Multimatic Ford GTD PRO program in 2024, it’s an old friend from Ford’s previous IMSA program heading back stateside to fill the stead.

Westbrook brings one of sports car’s most extensive resumes to JDC-Miller, where he’ll look to add a second Rolex 24 win (2018 in GTLM) and build on his 11 career wins. Drivers at different stages of their career complete the lineup, with LMP2 veteran Hanson, all of 24 years old, stepping up to GTP for the Michelin Endurance Cup races and all-class veteran Keating set to embark on another Daytona double duty drive, splitting time between this car and the No. 2 United Autosports USA ORECA 07 in LMP2.

No. 2 United Autosports USA ORECA LMP2 07

Ben Keating/Ben Hanley/Nico Pino/Pato O’Ward

2024 Iwsc Unitedautosportsusa 2 Daytona Livery 988x252

With four drivers boasting first names of four letters or less, what United Autosports’ No. 2 ORECA lacks in consonants it makes up for with accolades. Keating, first of the two Bens, is renowned as the top Bronze-rated driver in recent IMSA memory. He’s got two LMP2 titles and the last two GTE AM class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a Rolex 24 win in 2015 (GTD). Hanley looks to add a second Rolex watch (2020 LMP2) after missing out in 2023 by just 0.016 seconds. Pino starred in a handful of Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3) races with Sean Creech Motorsport in 2023. O’Ward, a four-time IndyCar race winner and McLaren F1 reserve driver, has a pair of Rolex 24 class wins on his resume (2017 Prototype Challenge, 2022 LMP2).

No. 04 Crowdstrike Racing by APR ORECA LMP2 07

George Kurtz/Colin Braun/Toby Sowery/Malthe Jakobsen

2024 Iwsc Crowdstrikeracing 04 Daytona Livery 988x252

A Rolex 24 redemption arc is on tap for Crowdstrike by APR, which came up just 0.016 seconds shy of last year’s LMP2 win in a fantastic photo finish. It was one of the few misses in an otherwise great year for Kurtz, who won IMSA races at Watkins Glen International and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in LMP2 and Braun, who bookended the year in GTP with wins at Daytona and Michelin Raceway and added a third victory at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

These two have raced together for several years in different series, winning countless races (including a 24 Hours of Le Mans class win), and now are paired for a full LMP2 campaign in IMSA as they look to capture titles they both barely missed a year ago. A Rolex 24 win would be Braun’s fourth (one overall, two class) and a first for the other three drivers. The young drivers alongside bolstering the lineup are Sowery, an Indy NXT race winner who has dabbled in sports cars, and Jakobsen, who has a European Le Mans Series title and a Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring race win in LMP3.

No. 8 Tower Motorsports ORECA LMP2 07

John Farano/Michael Dinan/Scott McLaughlin/Ferdinand Habsburg

2024 Iwsc Towermotorsports 8 Daytona Livery 988x252

Ten different drivers made at least one start aboard Tower’s No. 8 ORECA in 2023 and the team will seek greater stability this year. They’ll have at least half that with the four at Rolex 24 actually competing against one of its full-season drivers; Charlie Eastwood will race the Rolex 24 in an AWA Corvette in GTD. The remaining quartet includes Farano, back from an injury that sidelined him the second half of last year, Dinan, who steps up from GTD into LMP2, McLaughlin, a four-time IndyCar race winner who won his first IMSA race with Tower at last year’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, and Habsburg, who has a 24 Hours of Le Mans win and three worldwide LMP2 championships on his resume.

No. 11 TDS Racing ORECA LMP2 07

Steven Thomas/Mikkel Jensen/Hunter McElrea/Charles Milesi

2024 Iwsc Tdrracing 11 Daytona Livery 988x252

The TDS pairing of Thomas and Jensen just missed out on the 2023 LMP2 championship, which would have been Thomas’ first and Jensen’s second in IMSA. They’ll return for an attempt to right that in 2024 and break through at the Rolex 24 with a pair of young new additions as extra drivers. Indy NXT veteran McElrea, 24, adds sports cars to his resume while Milesi, 22, is already fairly accomplished with an FIA World Endurance Championship title and 24 Hours of Le Mans race win to his name, both in LMP2, in 2021.

Little changes at Era for 2024, as the team seeks to recapture its Rolex 24-winning form of 2021. Tasked with the job are Merriman, two-time Rolex 24 winner Dalziel, teenaged rising star and Mazda MX-5 Cup winner Zilisch and 2023 Indy NXT champion Rasmussen, who will move up to IndyCar part-time in 2024.

High Class Racing adds the Mark Kvamme-led MDK Motorsports banner to its program in 2024 as it embarks on its third full season of IMSA LMP2 competition. Beyond Andersen, teenager Lucas moves up to LMP2 after sporadic LMP3 starts last year in IMSA and GT3-specification starts in another series. Hoerr and Huffaker, who has five IMSA wins (all in Michelin Endurance Cup races), complete the lineup.

United has taken the best in LMP3 from the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge in 2023 and brought them into one LMP2 car for 2024. Garg beat Goldburg for that championship. It’s Goldburg seat for a full season in the WeatherTech Championship this year alongside di Resta, a United team veteran who’s won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with them in the past. Garg will be the team’s Michelin Endurance Cup driver, while IndyCar driver Rosenqvist completes the Rolex 24 lineup.

Series stalwarts Sean Creech Motorsport will stand out once more in 2024, thanks to the decision to run the lone Ligier in its step up to LMP2 competition. They’ll keep the familiar pairing of Willsey, 62, and Barbosa, 48, the latter a two-time IMSA champion and three-time overall Rolex 24 winner, aboard the No. 33 entry. With promising 19-year-olds Edgar and Siegel completing the lineup, Willsey quipped “the age of our lineup looks a bit like a barbell, doesn’t it?”

Bobby Oergel’s PR1 Mathiasen team has lived through several iterations over its lengthy IMSA tenure, and adds another new co-entrant for 2024 in the form of Polish-flagged Inter Europol Competition. The Inter Europol squad made a handful of IMSA starts in 2020 but has primarily excelled in Europe, most recently winning the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new unit has also produced a new driving lineup after PR1’s 2023 champs, Ben Keating and Paul-Loup Chatin, moved to other LMP2 teams for 2024. Smiechowski (Le Mans, LMP2) and Boulle (Rolex 24, PC) have major 24-hour race class wins.

They’ll look to add to that run of form stepping up to LMP2 with three of the same drivers in Robinson, Fraga and Burdon, who have all won either and/or both of a full-season IMSA title or Michelin Endurance Cup in that time period. Adding to the fun at the Rolex 24 is Fraga’s Brazilian countryman fellow Felipe and longtime friend Massa. The 2008 Formula 1 runner-up makes both his IMSA and Rolex 24 debut in a one-off guest appearance.

DragonSpeed was a late entrant after the provisional entry list was released, but Elton Julian’s team has a habit of winning in January. The team won three times in four years in LMP2 from 2019 through 2022. Lux, part of the 2022 winning lineup, Allen, the driver who propelled Proton to the narrow LMP2 victory in the 2023 edition, and Simpson, who won at Sebring last year, were the first three drivers named to the program. Alvarez was confirmed as a fourth driver shortly thereafter.

Chatin, Hyett’s full-season co-driver, enters on the heels of winning the 2023 LMP2 championship and with a past Rolex win in LMP2 achieved in 2021. Brabham, grandson of F1 World Champion Jack, son of four-time IMSA GTP champion Geoff and nephew of past 24 Hours of Le Mans and American Le Mans Series champion David, has extensive experience across several race series and is the team’s Michelin Endurance Cup third driver. Quinn, who co-drove with Chatin in 2023, rounds out the Rolex 24 lineup.
