Silverstone Auctions achieve £8.7million in sales and 86% of classic cars sold in the Race Retro Live Online Auction
Silverstone Auctions Race Retro Live Online Auction was a huge success; the two-day sale saw classic cars, competition cars and automobilia items achieve a total of £8.7million in sales.
Significantly, 86% of the classic cars sold and there were a huge amount of standouts. From the 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 (FHC) Flat Floor, chassis #60 on the 60th anniversary of the E-Type, sold for an exceptional £140,625, to the low mileage 2008 Porsche 911 (997) Turbo which sold for £66,375, the cars spanned the decades and offered something for everyone. The glorious 1968 Ferrari 330GTC by Pininfarina had recently had Classiche accreditation applied for and sold for £331,875 in the Saturday sale.
Three exceptional Aston Martins were presented on day two of the auction, with all three selling. The 1970 DB6 Mk2 Vantage achieved £331,875, Lot 445, the 1969 Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 sold for £272,250 and the delightful, one of just 50, 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series 5 made £354,375.
A number of auction record prices were also achieved during the weekend. Lot 426, the Top Gear featured, UK-supplied, manual 1993 Toyota Supra Twin-Turbo sold for £47,250 which is a new, European auction record price. Lot 232, the 1989 BMW 635 CSi (E24) Highline – Motorsport Edition (Auto) surpassed Silverstone Auctions’ previous UK record of £33,188 and sold for £47,250. The third was an auction world record price, lot 263 the 1998 Lotus Elise Series 1, formerly owned by Nick Mason CBE, and sold for £29,812.
The instantly recognisable 1972 Reliant Regal Supervan III (Trotters Independent Trading Van), which is believed to be one of the original half dozen from the popular sitcom Only Fools and Horses, was offered without reserve. After a lot of bidding, the van sold for an incredible £36,000.
Each auction day also saw a dedicated competition car sale which resulted in a sales rate of 62%. The highest value car of the weekend sold on day one of the competition car sale, the 1950 HWM Alta Jaguar, which is an important part of Motorsport history. Selling for £517,500, it had been raced by Sir Stirling Moss, John Heath, Lance Macklin, George Abecassis and Rudi Fischer.
The opening lot on day one was lot 201, the Williams F1 – ‘Red 5’ FW14 display car. Offered without reserve, it had a huge amount of interest and sold for an incredible £174,375. The 2004 Palmer Jaguar JP1 TS and Trailer sold for significantly more than its presale estimate, reaching £47,812. Whilst lot 207, the 1989 FIA Lister-Chevrolet ‘Knobbly’ Sanction II ‘Centenary’ Sports Racer also sold above its top estimate for £298,125.
Silverstone Auctions are now inviting best of breed classics for their next two auctions, The May Sale (22nd May) and A Sale of Ferraris in Association with Ferrari Owners' Club of Great Britain (5th June).
