For the second year in a row, the 1000 Miglia restarts its engines at the approach of summer. From Wednesday, June 15 to Saturday, June 18, 425 extraordinary cars will revive the myth of the Red Arrow on the roads of Italy, crossing some 250 municipalities for nearly 2,000 kilometers in four days.
Unveiled this morning at Palazzo Loggia, in the presence of the Mayor of Brescia, Emilio del Bono, and the top management of ACI Brescia and 1000 Miglia Srl, the 2022 edition crosses the milestone of forty re-enactments: from the two five-yearly events in 1977 and 1982, to the biennial in 1984 to the annuals from 1986 to the present. The fortieth also coincides with the tenth anniversary of 1000 Miglia Srl, the company wholly owned by Automobile Club Brescia that has organized the world's most important regularity race since 2013.
Among the novelties for 2022 is the return of the Paddock to the Brixia Forum in via Caprera. After the change of location in 2021, due to the construction of the city's vaccine hub, scrutineering will once again take place in the Fiera pavilions.
The Roberto Gaburri Trophy, a true sporting prologue to the 1000 Miglia, also returns after a two-year absence. On the other hand, the appointment with the Ferrari Tribute, the review of Prancing Horse models, is renewed, with the 1000 Miglia Experience, the format dedicated to modern supercars, and the 1000 Miglia Green, the regularity race for models with alternative fuels.
On the sporting side, eyes are on the reigning champion. Andrea Vesco, triumphant in 2020 and 2021, is called upon to dispel the taboo of "never two without three" or “things come in threes”. In thirty-nine re-enactments, in fact, only Giuliano Canè has managed to triumph three consecutive times, from 1998 to 2000.
The Route
The 2022 edition of 1000 Miglia returns to travel clockwise across Italy, starting and finishing in Brescia after legs in Cervia-Milano Marittima, Rome and Parma. Twelve months after a version where the route returned to the anti-clockwise direction of the pre-war 1000 Miglia, from 1927 to 1938, it returns to the route that characterized the 1947 and 1948 editions and the subsequent editions from 1950 to 1957, as well as thirty-eight out of thirty-nine re-enactments.
On Wednesday, June 15, after lunch at the Mille Miglia Museum, the traditional Viale Venezia parade and rehearsals in the Castello, the crews will pass through Piazza Vittoria for the first time in the race. They will then leave Brescia in the direction of Lake Garda, pass through Desenzano, Salò and Sirmione before heading south and descending on the Adriatic coast. From Parco Giardino Sigurtà they will continue on to Mantua and Ferrara . Here the race dinner is scheduled in the Teatro Comunale, and will be the prelude to the approach to the Comacchio coast. The leg will end in Cervia-Milano Marittima for the first overnight stop.
The morning of Thursday, June 16, will be characterized by climbs and descents. After Forlì and Gambettola, the cars will climb the hairpin bends leading to Mount Titano and land in San Marino. From here the descent to cross the Marche region and head to Urbino, a treasure trove of history and beauty. After stopping for lunch in Passignano sul Trasimeno, the journey will resume to arrive at the Autodromo dell'Umbria and then in Norcia, the easternmost point of the edition. From here the return to central Italy, with descent over Terni and Rieti to the arrival in Rome and the Via Veneto parade.
On Friday 17, the ascent from the capital to Parma will cross four regions. The race will leave Lazio via Ronciglione and Marta. Then Tuscany to Siena, with a stop for lunch in Piazza del Campo. The Siena refreshment stop will be a prelude to the passages of San Miniato, Pontedera and Cascina, then on to Viareggio and Versilia. After Sarzana will start the climb to the impressive Passo della Cisa, the last effort before the arrival in Parma.
Saturday will see the passages of Varano De' Melegari and Salsomaggiore until the transit, for the first time, to Stradella and Pavia. From the Autodromo di Monza, the race will head to Bergamo, a welcome return to celebrate the joint nomination with Brescia as City of Culture 2023. Chiari and Travagliato will be the prelude to the arrival in Brescia, with the crowning of the winner.
