Legends Cars' James Newbery 'Racing To Cure Motor Neurone Disease'

Launches fundraising effort for Legends Cars finale - aiming to raise £2.5K at Brands Hatch event next month
Unique #2Mater car to transform across all six of the weekend’s races!

Legends Cars Championship with MRF Tyres racer James Newbery has launched a fun and exciting fundraising initiative for the final event of the 2022 season at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit next month, where his striking #2Mater car will be undergoing some dramatic changes throughout the weekend.

Under the banner ‘Racing to cure Motor Neurone Disease’, Newbery is aiming to raise around £2,500 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association – a minimum of £1 per every mile raced in the Legends Cars season this year.

Helping to highlight and showcase the charity drive over the weekend 5th/6th November at the Kent venue, Newbery’s #2Mater car – which has a livery based on the ‘Mater’ character from the CGI-animated Disney Pixar film franchise ‘Cars’ – will transform before everyone’s eyes across the six races, which form rounds 14 and 15 of the Legends Cars campaign.

Motor Neurone Disease is, of course, a truly heart-breaking disease for which there is currently no cure. Very little is known about MND, the reasons it occurs in the first place and what triggers its onset, and it is a disease which has had a devastating impact on the Newbery family – James’ father Paddy tragically lost his life to MND on Boxing Day in 2020.

Along with an attempt to raise his minimum target of donations for the MNDA, with collections taking place at the track across the Brands Hatch weekend, Newbery – as he has been all year – is also striving to drive awareness of MND and the need to boost research into this very cruel disease.

In addition, Newbery will be welcoming the Rockets Children’s Motorcycle Display Team to Brands Hatch on the Saturday of the Legends Cars finale, Bonfire Night – quite poetic with the race meeting being the annual ‘Fireworks Finale’ at the Kent track.

The team, comprising children between six and 14 years-of-age, tours the country with their high adrenaline show and will be on hand at Brands to lend support to the #2Mater squad where they will also host their 2022 awards ceremony. On the Sunday, Newbery will host prestigious guests from 2Excel Engineering, a maintenance and repair organisation working with Airbus and Boeing.

Renowned as one of the friendliest, if not the friendliest, paddocks in British motorsport, fans attending the season finale are warmly invited to head to garage 31 in the main pits, where the #2Mater squad will be located, to find out more about this one-of-a-kind initiative.

James Newbery – Driver #2Mater:
“We’ve spent a long time working on our plans for the Brands Hatch finale, and we think what we’re doing with #2Mater is pretty exciting, will be a lot of fun for the fans to watch – especially all of the kids – and is certainly something unique as well. It’s going to take a lot of work across the weekend for our family-run team, but we’re buzzing to see how it all turns out. Hopefully as we’ve planned!

“Motor Neurone Disease is something which has directly impacted my family, losing my father two years ago to this awful, indiscriminate disease, and so supporting MNDA is something we’ve been doing to try and help raise awareness. MND is said by many to be cruelest disease, I firmly believe that to be true having witnessed what it did to my late father Paddy.

“We’re very much looking forward to Brands Hatch and hopeful plenty of fans will dig deep and help us to raise our target of £2,500 for the MNDA. It’s a very serious cause, but we’re also aiming to have a lot of fun over the weekend and everyone is welcome to come along and join us!”

Phil Cooper – Legends Cars Championship with MRF Tyres Owner:
“James has been doing fantastic work all year trying to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease and, on behalf of everyone associated with Legends Cars, we are delighted to help support the cause and very much looking forward to seeing the fun things James has in store for Brands Hatch. What he’s planning is very unique and should be incredibly entertaining to watch over the race weekend.”
