2020 World Marathon Challenge lands in Antarctica and Australia

What's Your Challenge?

After the first Marathon in Cape town the competitors have landed in Antarctica. Conditions were cold and windy, even for Antarctica!

The second Marathon of the 2020 World Marathon Challenge got underway at 21:45 UTC. Conditions were tough with the competitors running into the wind for almost half of each loop. In the Men’s Race Chen Huang (CHN) had a narrow lead over Luke Wigman (GBR) who was closing in. In the Women’s Race Kristina Schou Madsen (DEN) led Jessica Jones (USA) in another tough battle. All competitors were progressing well at this point!

The race leaders were approximately 3/4 way through the Marathon and were likely to finish with times of one hour slower (approx) than the African leg in Cape Town, due to the challenging conditions. Kristina Schou Madsen (DEN) had the overall lead. Graham Fowke (GBR) led the Men’s Race followed by Milosz Pasiecznik (POL) and Lukasz Urbaniak (POL) who are running together. In the Women’s Race, Kristina Schou Madsen (DEN) was followed by Jessica Jones (USA) with Suzanne McKeen (AUS) currently in 3rd place.

Kristina Schou Madsen (DEN) was first to cross the finish line and is the overall winner of the 2nd Marathon of this year’s World Marathon Challenge in a time of 3:54:20. Second in the Women’s race was Jessica Jones (USA) 4:24:02. In the Men’s race, the winner is Graham Fowke (GBR) in 4:06:31 followed by Milosz Pasiecznik (POL) and Lukasz Urbaniak (POL) in joint 2nd place in a time of 4:15:25.

World Marathon Challenge - Cape Town - Africa

The 2020 World Marathon Challenge began on the continent of Africa, on February 6th. The Africa Intercontinental Marathon commenced on the scenic Seapoint Promenade at 1900 (7pm) local time or 1700 (5pm) UTC. Unlike other years, the Antarctica Intercontinental Marathon will be the second rather than first of the seven marathons this year: flying conditions have dictated it best to fly to the frozen continent on February 7th. It will then be onward to the destinations of Perth, Dubai, Madrid, Fortaleza and a finish in Miami, which must occur by 17:00 UTC (12 noon local time) on February 13th.

The first race began in Africa at Seapoint Promenade, Cape Town at 19:12 local time (17:12 UTC) on February 6th. The runners have 168 hours to finish their seventh continent and seventh marathon in Miami, North America, which means they must finish by 17:12 UTC on February 13th, or 12:12 Miami time!

Chen Huang (CHN) was first to reach the half marathon point in 1:26:09. It was very windy in Cape Town this evening, while Kristina Madsen (DEN) led the women’s race at half way, running 1:33:24 at that point. She was 1 minute 30 secs ahead of Jessica Jones (USA).

The runners were all doing well in the very windy conditions and everybody was expected to finish easily this first of seven marathons.

Chen Huang (CHN) won the Africa Intercontinental Marathon in 2:56:57, while following were at the 2nd place Olivier Thiriet (FRA) 3:03:56, 3rd Miłosz Pasiecznik (POL) 3:06:33 and 4th was Luke Wigman (GBR) 3:10:53.

The winner of the women’s race was Kristina Madsen (DEN) 3:10:53 and Jessica Jones (USA) finished second in 3:19:00.
